ENG401Special Topics in Applied Linguistics
Course Aims This course is built upon students’ knowledge, experience, and skills gained from the overall courses of linguistics they have taken so far. Given its interdisciplinary character, applied linguistics will be investigated and critically discussed from multiple perspectives (e.g., cognitive, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, and educational). Emphasis will be placed on the interface between theory and practice, including translating theory into practice and using practice to build theory. The selection of topics will be based on their timeliness and relevance to current trends and issues faced by language users in the digital era. Suggested topics may include Corpus Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Assessment and Testing, Sociolinguistics, Historical Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Multilingualism and Translanguaging, and etc. The selected topics are subject to the course instructor(s) expertise or specialized area(s).
