ENG220 Intercultural Communication
Course Aims This course aims to enhance students’ intercultural communication competence and performance. Central topics include the basic concepts and theories of culture and intercultural communication, cultural variations in verbal and nonverbal communication; language and identity; cultural diversity; study abroad and immigrants; culture shock and intercultural adjustment/adaptation; and English as a lingua franca in global communication. Empirical studies investigating the relationship between linguistic development and intercultural communication are also reviewed and critiqued, and their theoretical and practical implications will be highlighted for language learning and teaching.
