Vickie Monthong
(currently an English Philology PhD candidate in Germany)

My experiences at the English department fuelled my journey into post-graduate studies. After earning a Master degree, I am now a PhD candidate studying video games in Germany.
As a graduate of the Bachelor programme, the far-reaching and contemporary topics included in the curriculum have aspired me to further pursue an academic career. The curriculum demonstrate a cutting-edge approach to think anew of the English language and its interconnectedness with other disciplines. Because of the wide variety of topics I encountered in my Bachelor and the encouraging learning atmosphere it provides, I was well-equipped to go to academic conferences and establish international academic exchanges across different countries. I believe that the nurturing environment at the English department and the comprehensive courses in this programme offer a strong foundation for my career path.

Evangeline Leung
(completed a Master in English Studies in the U.K.;
currently working in the field of Business Administration and Management)

It was my Bachelors degree that cemented my interest in English literature and pushed me to pursue a Masters in the UK. While there were certainly challenging aspects, it was a great experience that allowed me to experience a new culture while deepening my understanding for English literature and the language. The interdisciplinary approach to English during my Bachelors proved crucial in my studies, fueling discussions with my fellow classmates in analyzing various literary pieces and providing different viewpoints. It was particularly interesting discussing various adaptations of works which I had mostly only encountered the written form previously but was able to experience in person during my masters in the UK. It provided a fresh mindset to understanding not just literature and its adaptations, but also other cultural texts. The broad spectrum of topics and texts studied nurtured a greater appreciation for English as a whole.

Kaycee Chung
(currently working in the field of Hotel and Hospitality)

Hi there!  I am working as a Reception Manager in a luxury hotel in London. Having earned a bachelor degree in English Literature helped me grow in my career immensely.
I am able to connect with people with a peripheral understanding  on their cultural background. I can always quickly immerse myself into their experiences by listening and responding cohesively. In speaking of people management, I implemented the analytical skills needed to decode primary texts to simplify instructions as well as to be flexible with each individual in my team.
As the saying goes - “limit’s the sky”, follow your passion and always give your best, I believe you can achieve anything you want!

I am working in the front office at an investment bank in Hong Kong. As a graduate of the Bachelor programme, I am immensely influenced by the interdisciplinary approach to teaching, which really nurtures and opens my mind and perspectives.
Studying English here leads me to a journey of self-discovery, as literature and culture are two pillars that construct who we are and who we choose to be. In my workplace, I am well-equipped with an open mind to handle the hectic business and communicate with global clients. Language proficiency is greatly valued in the business world, as it is basic and one of its key attributes. The study here reinforced my fundamental language skills, and with that, I can streamline the workflow, close deals, and develop relationships with my clients.
Language is the key. Your thoughts and words can take you further and broaden your path. You will perform well in both academia and the business world.

I have been working in the field of F&B in one of the exclusive ethnic clubs in Hong Kong since graduated. I was involved in different departments and positions through the years, from front-house event management to back-house HR and finance management.
The diversity of knowledge that I have acquired from the English Department has benefited me to appreciate cultures and literatures from other countries and has strengthened my English skills in a practical way as well. As I work in an environment full of non-locals, being proficient in English is essential and I feel comfortable and confident when communicating or writing in English.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratefulness and appreciation to the English Department for providing a wide spectrum of courses across the fields of literature, linguistic, cultural studies and translation which has trained and directed me to be a all-round person. I believe that after a four-year versatile and resourceful of study, you will find yourself suitable and be able to explore different careers.
