ENG302 Syntax and Semantics
Course Aims This course builds on the foundation of the pre-requisite course (ENG160) and the course on English Grammar (ENG214) to introduce students to the interaction between grammar and different layers of meaning – literal meaning in semantics and speaker meaning in pragmatics. The course will cover key issues related to the structural encoding of events (participants and time) and the interpretations generated, as well as topics concerning the meaning relationship between elements of a sentence (both said and unsaid). This course serves to advance students’ understanding of syntactic theories and phenomena and to prepare them for the more advanced linguistics courses in their final year.
