This course develops the ability to communicate in basic French in a culturally appropriate manner using the four primary language skills: speaking, listening, comprehension, reading and writing. By studying the course, students gain familiarity with the French language: its sounds, rhythms, intonation, vocabulary, structure, and written form; beginning experiences in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French; basic communication skills and the ability to express simple needs, and an introductory acquaintance with the cultures of French-speaking countries.
This course is a continuation of the basics of the French communication skills covered in French 191. Students will continue to develop fluency in the language and will be introduced to more complex grammar and constructions. The course focuses on mastery of the language required to function at a basic level in a range of contexts using correct and appropriate language.

Students will continue to develop fluency in the language and will be introduced to more complex grammar and more complex constructions. They will also learn how to organize speech efficiently. The course also aims to prepare students to sit for the first levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
