Dr Cheung attended the 2026 PALA Summer School (Stylistics: Back to the Future?), 17–18 August 2026, at Uppsala University (Sweden), taught by Professor Katie Wales, a co-founder of PALA and author of A Dictionary of Stylistics, and Professor Michael Toolan, a leading narrative stylistician and former PALA Chair. The programme also featured Professor Brian Walker, a key figure in corpus stylistics.

The experience was especially fruitful because it combined rare, intensive contact with scholars who have shaped the field’s foundations, narrative analysis, and corpus methods.

Dr. Cheung also had the chance to present ‘Extending Mind Style to Anorexic Subjectivity: Linguistic Insufficiency and Metaphors in Prose and Graphic Eating Disorder Memoirs’ at the accompanying PALA conference (19–22 August 2026) and to test, in a specialist forum, how mind style can be extended to multimodal eating-disorder narratives.
