On September 4, 2025, the Department of English Language and Literature took part in the event Pathways to Success: Alumni Perspectives on Teaching Careers. Organised by the Industrial Attachment Office in collaboration with the Departments of Chinese, English, and History, the session invited alumni now working as teachers to return and share their journeys. Representing English, three alumni — Mr. Clement Su, Miss Stephy Kan, and Mr. Ron Chow — spoke to students about their paths into education.

As undergraduates, all three speakers chose the Education Concentration, which requires students to complete a Work Placement Course. They reflected on how these experiences supported their transition to teaching and offered practical insights for students considering this career.
Mr. Clement Su highlighted the importance of patience and creativity, noting how hands on projects and classroom interactions can foster learning for both teachers and students.

Miss Stephy Kan spoke about understanding learners at different levels, adding that building trust and positive relationships make teaching both meaningful and rewarding.

Mr. Ron Chow stressed adaptability and resilience as essential qualities, pointing out that teachers serve not just as educators but also as role models and companions in students’ growth.

The Head of Department expressed appreciation to the three alumni and presented them with tokens of gratitude.

At the beginning of the evening, the three alumni also came together for a commemorative photo.

The session concluded with lively conversations between alumni, teachers, and students, strengthening connections across the Department’s community.

The Department warmly thanks Mr. Su, Miss Kan, and Mr. Chow for their thoughtful sharing and encouragement.
