JALTCALL 2025 – An International Conference on Computer-Assisted Language Learning for All 

From July 18–20, 2025, faculty members and postgraduate students from the Department of English Language and Literature participated in the JALTCALL 2025 Conference organized by the Japan Association for Language Teaching at Tokyo University of Science, Katsushika Campus.

 

The 2025 conference theme, CALL for All, recognizes the new reality in the educational profession where language teachers have all effectively become computer-assisted language learning (CALL) practitioners following the recent AI boom. The three-day conference was filled with captivating keynote speeches, inspiring presentations, and interactive workshops.
 
During the conference, our English department contributed two research papers reflecting the joint efforts of both faculty members and MPhil students: 
 

Paper 1. Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools in University English Language Education: A Systematic Review

Authors: Chan, H. T., Leung, M. M., & Wong, S. P. (2025) -- This study, co-authored by Dr. Thomas Chan, Dr. Grace Leung, and Mr. Sheung Ping WONG (Project Assistant, Language Center, HKSYU), presents the results of a systematic review of the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools in university English language learning and teaching (ELT).  

Paper 2. The Impact of ChatGPT on Translation Tasks in Hong Kong Universities: Implications for Future Educational Practices

 

Authors: Liu, J., Yin, H., Qi, M., & Huang, Z. (2025) -- This study, a collaboration between Dr. Kacey Liu, our MPhil students Anna Yin and Alisa Qi, and Dr. Michelle Huang (Assistant Professor, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong), explores the impact of ChatGPT on translation tasks within Hong Kong universities, providing valuable insights that can inform future educational practices and enhance understanding of AI technologies in translation education.

 

The JALTCALL 2025 Conference provided a platform for insightful discussions on the evolving landscape of language education in the age of artificial intelligence. The contributions from our English department highlighted the integration of generative AI tools in language learning and translation tasks. Well done to all involved!
