English Public Speaking Contest 2025

Organizer: The HKFYG Leadership Institute

Date: 30 March 2025 (Sun)

By Dr. Rebekah Bale, Acting Head of The Department of English Language and Literature

Two important events occurred this weekend, one positive and one negative but both illustrating the importance of communication in English: the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens and the devastating earthquake in Myanmar. In cases such as these, English as a bridge between different groups becomes vital: building friendships and providing support.

A third important event which I was lucky enough to attend was the Grand Finals of the English Public Speaking Contest organized by the HKFYG and the English-Speaking Union. (The HKFYG English Public Speaking Contest 2025 | The HKFYG Leadership Institute)

The five finalists in Junior and Senior sections were joined by 5 Best Progress contestants. Each student was required to present a 3-minute speech and then answer two questions from the adjudicators.  Not an easy task!

All of the contestants showed their hard work and dedication in their composed performances. As one of the sponsors for this event, the Department of English Language and Literature recognizes their achievements and wishes them an English-filled future!
