“Introduction to Writing Centers Around the World”
2025/2026 Departmental Seminar (Education)
On 24 October 2025, at the invitation of our Acting Head, Dr Rebekah Bale, Dr. Molly McHarg delivered a departmental seminar on writing centres. The seminar covered their history, the current educational landscape and future prospects in Hong Kong and China.
Dr. Molly McHarg began her talk by sharing her background and explaining what exactly a writing center is. In demonstrative terms, she outlined the history and development of writing centers, highlighting their evolving roles and significance within educational institutions. Particularly illustrative is her discussion of how these centers have transformed from basic tutorial spaces into collaborative environments that foster critical thinking and improve writing skills. As a testament to their importance, she provided examples of successful writing centers across Hong Kong and China, emphasizing their impact on student learning and academic achievement.
