The Department of English Language and Literature has organized a Children's Literature Seminar on the 5th of November 2022. The topic of the seminar is "Children's Literature, City, and Language". The main purpose of this seminar is to promote the study of children's literature in multiple levels. It aims at facilitating academic collaloration between professional parties and encouraging students to take part in the research culture of the university. Through this seminar, the department would liek to show that children's literature is more than the reading materials for children's education, but it is an academic discipline that permeates in the daily context.

The seminar is conducted in a hyprid mode by having overseas scholars to present online and having local ones to attend the event in person. While the seminar has invited a number of guests from other institutions to join the day, it is also opened to the public in the format of webinar. Six guest speakers are invited, including four scholars, Prof. Andrew Mei-Ying Wu, Dr. Faye Dorcas Schwendeman, Prof. Eddie Tay and Ms Clairine Chan. They have given talks related to the role of city and languages in the narrative of children's literature, the reception of fairy tales, and children's voice in educational materials. The other two guest speakers, Ms Connie Yuen and Ms Nga Man Wong provides an overview to the challenges faced in publishing Hong Kong children's books.

In addition, 17 students have taken part in the poster presentation. It provides a great oppotunity to students to explain their research visually on the poster, while at the same time, they are able to verbally explain to teachers, students, and guest what they have investigated. These topics include the gender representation in Disney and Hayao Miyazaki's animation to the use of horror in childlike cartoon. Some students have also examined the understanding of children's literature in both Chinese and English texts while some look into the language use in educational materials.

In order to promote and demonstrate the publication of children's literature in Hong Kong, Cotton Tree Publishing has kindly provided the department some of their own books. A mini-exhibition is made to showcase the wide varieties of children's books in the market.
