Picturebooks in and across Asia in the 21st Century

This online symposium aims to address the growing significance of picturebooks across Asia in the 21st century. It seeks to explore the diverse ways in which picturebooks engage with the Asian landscape—as literary works, educational tools, and reading materials for both children and adults. The symposium welcomes presentations that investigate how literary productions in Asia influence one another, taking into account factors such as historical background, sociocultural context, language use, aesthetics, and the digitalization of picturebooks in Asia.

We invite submissions of abstracts for 20-minute presentations that address the symposium theme. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Historical and cultural examinations of picturebooks in the Asian context
Studies on the collaboration between visual and textual narratives in Asian picturebooks
Critical approaches to understanding picturebooks in the Asian context
Responses to global and local issues in Asian picturebooks
Nostalgic and diasporic themes in Asian picturebooks
The digitalization of Asian picturebooks

Please send abstracts of 300 words to Dr. Michelle Chan at cychan@hksyu.edu, along with a short biographical statement (100 words) by 15 August, 2025. The full conference programme will be announced following the proposal deadline, once all presenters have been selected.
