Programme Objectives and Outcomes

The BA (Hons) in English provides students with a solid foundation in the linguistic, literary and cultural aspects of the English language and competence in translating and interpreting between English and Chinese. 

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of the programme are:

  • To strengthen productive skills in written and spoken English;
  • To provide broad educational exposure which encourages bilingual competence and multicultural sensitivity and development;
  • To stimulate intellectual growth through providing an educationally generalist programme;
  • To encourage student exploration of cultural heritages through critical analyses of English language and literatures in English;
  • To initiate students to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge in the hybrid, web-like and complex 21st century.

Students need to complete 124 credits in the five components of the degree:

Language Courses 8 credits
Departmental Core Courses  59 credits
Departmental Electives 30 credits
General Education Courses 12 credits
Free Electives 15 credits
TOTAL 124 credits

 

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon completion of the Concentration in Literary and Cultural Studies, students should be able to:

  • Identify and analyze issues and topics in literary and cultural studies through various approaches including the interdisciplinary approach;
  • Formulate critical questions and investigate topics through research and writing;
  • Engage analytically with cutting edge literary and cultural studies concepts and theories;
  • Evaluate intellectual arguments in complex situation, thereby demonstrate sensitivity to context;
  • Articulate the interconnectedness of knowledge.

Free Electives

Students are allowed to take Departmental Electives to fulfill Free Electives credit requirements. They can also choose Departmental Electives that are out of their current year of study. In this respect, it should be noted that senior year students are not allowed by regulation to take Year One courses (unless they need to do so in order to graduate).

The 15 Free Elective credits can be used to complete a Minor in another subject such as Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Chinese Language & Literature, History, and Journalism & Mass Communication.

Education Bureau Recognition

The BA (Hons) in English is a recognised by the Education Bureau as a Language Major degree providing relevant subject knowledge exempting graduates from the written papers of the Language Proficiency Assessment (LPR) for Teachers of English. Graduates who wish to pursue a career in English language teaching should complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme majoring in English within three years of taking up employment as an English teacher in order to be fully exempted from the LPR and fully qualified as a teacher.

 

Newly structured Programme 2024 -2025

The English Department will offer a newly structured programme in 2024-25. The programme will be primarily divided into two streams, Linguistics Stream and Literature Stream. It will take an interdisciplinary approach to the areas related to languages and communication, literary and cultural studies.

  • To strengthen students' English proficiency for global communication in competitive and trilingual environments;
  • To sharpen student awareness of the linguistic, literary, and cultural aspects of English studies
  • To provide broad educational exposure which encourages bilingual competence and multicultural sensitivity and development 
  • To foster personal, intellectual, and career development through the study of English language and literatures in English;
  • To initiate students to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge in the digital era 

Students need to complete 124 credits in the five components of the degree:

Departmental Electives 30 credits

  • develop effective communication skills in English across various context, media, and modalities; 
  • critically investigate, analyze, and synthesize linguistic concepts, ideas, and data of research;
  • relate literary texts of different form and genre to their socio-historical context;
  • appraise the interdisciplinary nature of English Studies through exploring the complexity of texts, language, and culture; 
  • formulate critical questions and creative ideas by approaching language from linguistics, literary, and cultural perspectives.
